One of the books we have read in Year 1 this term has been ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin. This story is a non-fiction book, all about Floella’s life. We listened to how Floella moved from the tropical island of Trinidad all the way to London, England. To start with, we made predictions about what would happen in the story. We thought about what Floella’s life would have been like in England and if she would really get the chance to meet the queen. As we read the story, we found out that some of predictions were correct. Next, we started to think about Floella’s feelings at different points in her life. Year 1 were challenged with using more ambitious vocabulary in their writing and they all excelled in this challenge! Year 1 suggested adjectives such as ‘devastated, miserable, curious, joyful and grateful.’ They then put those adjectives into full sentences, sometimes using ‘and’ to join two adjectives and improve their sentences! Well done Year 1- amazing work!
