Visit to St Chad’s

A post in our latest news section.

The Year 5 Local Church topic centres around Jesus’ mission and how we, as followers of Christ, carry out this mission today in our own communities. In class, Year 5 have looked at how our parishes belong to a wider community – the diocese – and the role of a bishop in leading that diocese.

We spent some time looking at the symbols that a bishop would wear, such as the mitre or crozier and what they mean. The crozier represents a shepherd. As a shepherd looks after his sheep, so does God look after us.

We have explored how, even as a united community, there are differences among us and that these should be celebrated. These differences make us unique but our beliefs and values unite us together as one.

We also took a little trip to St Chad’s church to look at the similarities and differences between a Roman Catholic and a Church of England church. There were lots of similarities in terms of how the church is set out, but some differences in how they are decorated. We were interested to hear that there is a spectrum of Church of England churches, some of which are very similar to Roman Catholic but some that are hugely different. However, we all understood that despite these differences in beliefs we are all united in community with God.
