The Arrival Writing

A post in our latest news section.

In Year 6 this half term we have produced some lovely writing based on the picture book ‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan.

We started by exploring some of the striking images in the first chapter and thought about how a metaphor is used in the form of a dark shadow to represent fear and danger surrounding the city. We used expanded nouns phrases to describe the image below constructing some fantastic descriptive sentences.

We then began to explore the next few images in the book which told the narrative of a man seen to be packing up his belongings and leaving on a journey alone, leaving his family behind. A journey we later came to realize later on was a journey to find a better life for his family. We used the first three images to begin to write a narrative that could go alongside the images in the wordless book. We focused on conveying emotion between the characters building emotive phrases together with some shared writing before combining our ideas into an initial paragraph.

We then continued this and planned out a further two paragraphs to represent the other images in chapter 1. The narrative retold the events of the night before where the man is packing before moving on to the next day where he wakes up, shares a last breakfast with his family and heads to the train station. Again we focused on using emotive language throughout. As well as this we also focused on building cohesion between our paragraphs, something we worked hard at during the editing process.

Once we had planned, written and edited each paragraph of our narrative, we put them all together into a final published version!

Well done Year 6!
