Our recent past

A post in our latest news section.

Year 1 have been learning all about the recent past in their History topic. Over the past few weeks we have learnt about the type of toys that grandparents and great-grandparents might have played with when they were little. Year 1 found out that in the past, toys were often made from wood or metal. Toys included rocking horses, yo-yos, spinning tops and marbles. We had a chance to play with some of these toys in class, including a cup and ball and a Jacob’s ladder. Year 1 had so much fun! We have also learnt about how schools were different in the past. Teachers used to write on chalkboards, not like the electronic boards we have in class today. We also found out about some playground games that the children used to play in school yards a long time ago. One of our favourite lessons was finding learning about fashion throughout the decades. We learnt that in the 1950s people dressed very smartly, but in the 1960s there were lots of brightly coloured clothes with bold patterns. We had so much fun designing our own outfit for one of the decades.
Year 1 have shown a good understanding throughout the unit! Well done Year 1!
