Learning about Our Senses in Nursery

A post in our latest news section.

In Science this half term the children have explored their five senses; sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.

To begin with we discussed what parts of the body are needed for each sense. The children then took part in different activities using their senses. We discovered what it would feel like to have no sense of sight by blindfolding ourselves and trying to draw a circle. The children giggled as they seen their drawings once they could see again.

We then used our ears to hear lots of different sounds in the environment.

To test our sense of taste we took part in an experiment tasting lots of different cordials, we guessed what the taste would be by using our sight and smell senses. Mrs Simpson tricked us by putting food colouring in water. We all thought it was going to be blueberry juice because it was blue, but it was just water. We had some good guesses at the other flavours of cordial.

We played another blindfolded game to test our sense of smell. Our friends held some fruit and vegetables to our noses as we were blindfolded and we had to guess what it was by the smell. This was very tricky, but the banana was the smell that most children guessed correctly.

Our sense of touch was explored throughout our exploration of the senses with lots of wonderful vocabulary being used to describe the feel of objects. One activity we really enjoyed using our sense of touch was when we took off our socks and shoes off and crunched in some autumn leaves that we collected from around the school. The children thought they felt spikey like hedgehogs.
