Corpus Christi

This half term in Nursery we have been exploring hot and cold places. We began looking at cold places and the polar regions.
The children were fascinated to learn that some areas of our world were covered in snow and ice for almost the whole year. The children took part in an experiment demonstrating how animals living in the polar regions kept warm even on the coldest of days. They learned that the animals grow a think layer of fat or blubber and fur to help keep the cold out. We wanted to put this to the test to see how much blubber kept the cold out for the animals.
We placed one hand into a glove full of lard, we then picked up some ice and explored how cold our hand without blubber was compared to the hand with blubber. The children all felt that the blubber will definitely help keep the cold out for the animals.

We then explored icebergs and frozen oceans. We talked about how sometimes the weather can become a little warmer and the icebergs begin to melt into the ocean and drift away.
We filled a tray with some blue water to represent the ocean and then poured talc on top to represent the icebergs. Using yellow washing up liquid on a cotton bud to represent the warm sun, the children took it in turns to put the cotton bud onto the icebergs and watched what happened to them.
The children were very excited to see the ‘sun’ melt the ‘icebergs’ and watched as they drifted away.
