Exploring Lent and Easter in Nursery

A post in our latest news section.

In RE this half term, Nursery have been thinking about Lent and Easter as a time for growing. We discussed growth in nature having read the story of ‘The Tiny Seed’, and learnt to sing ’The seed song’.  We also watched a time lapse of some chicks hatching out of their eggs before the children observed some growth of their over time, by planting some cress seeds and runner beans.

We then discussed Lent; a time for growing in Love. We introduced the concept of Lent, as a time where Christians show love for one another if different ways. We talked about all of the ways in which children can grow in love such as sharing, helping and giving. The children thought of ways love can be shown to others. Some said by giving hugs, others said by helping tidy away their toys or helping their mammies with the dishes. Many of the children chose to demonstrate caring and sharing in the home corner.

Next we talked about Good Friday and looking forward to Easter. The children demonstrated an understanding of Easter by retelling the Easter story in their own words. We tasted Hot cross buns as we talked about their link to Good Friday. The children also made rustic cross’ from twigs and decorated banners with the words ‘Alleluia, Jesus is alive!’ on it.

This was followed by a moment of reflection about the meaning and purpose of Growing.
