Ancient Greece- That History Bloke

We started off with a true or false quiz testing what we already know about Ancient Greece!
Greece was a country- False it was split into lots of city states, which often went to war against each other.
Slaves could be bought and sold at a market, just like animals- True- Often people captured in battle were turned into slaves. However, girls were much less valuable than boys!
Greeks invented voting- True- Democracy come from Ancient Greek meaning the rule of the people. The Athenians invented democracy. One of the ways they voted was using white and black pebbles. Only men over 30 were allowed to vote, women and slaves were not!
Spartan parents owned their own children- False- A child of Spartan parents was owned by SPARTA. They were trained to be strong and serve their city. Any babies that Sparta didn’t think were strong they left on a hillside over night to see if they survived, if they did they accepted them back because they thought that Zeus had a plan for them.
Children from Sparta were punished for stealing food- False- They were actually expected to steal. But they were punished for being caught! They were expected to be sneaky and work together in a team to be good on the battle field. If they got caught they were not sneaky enough!

Next, we thought about language and which modern words are based on Ancient Greek words!
Telescope- tele- from a long distance Scopia- to see
Astronaut- astro- stars nautos- sailor Star Sailor
Alphabet- alpha/beta- the first two letters of the Greek alphabet
Telephone- tele- from a long distance phonia- to hear
Hippopotamus- Hippo- horse potamus- of the river
Music- named after Zeus’s daughters- the muses because they were ‘beautiful’ and ‘gorgeous’ meaning joyful and full of pleasure
Autobiography- auto-self bio-life graphy- to write/draw
Greeks
Only the word Greeks is NOT actually Ancient Greek- it was originally said by the Romans!
We then thought about what the Greeks wore when going into battle.
As you can see we really enjoyed trying on replicas of Ancient Greek battle gear!
After that we were able to look at and hold lots of Ancient Greek artefacts including shields, swords, lyre and pottery.
