This half term in Nursery has been largely centred around New Life and showing care and concern for living things. We have talked about what we were like as babies and what helped us grow into the people we are today. We then likened this to animals and explored how farmers look after their animals. We then progressed on to plants and talked about what things a plant might need to grow. The children identified that like us the plants need food and water to grow, they were surprised to hear that they need sunlight too. This led us onto planting our very own cress seeds and beans, over the weeks the children took good care of the plants in our growing station and loved seeing them grow over time.
Finally this week we set up a chick adoption station; this involved the children selecting their very own (wind up) chick to take home and look after putting all that we have learned into practice.

First, the children found their own bag to keep their chick safe by recognising their name own on the gift tag.

The children then excitedly chose their very own chick, from our chick garden and popped it into their bag, this was theirs to take home and look after.

The children then gave their chicks their very own name. We had some wonderfully imaginative names such as Chick, Perridge, Rainbow and even Nugget. We added the chick’s names to the gift tags, the children were so proud of them.

Finally, the children used their fine motor skills and knowledge and understanding of the world to make a naming certificate and baby book for their chick. This involved the children talking about how they are going to look after their chicks, what foods the chicks may like to eat and what activities they may do with the chicks.
