In the Spring term Year 5 learnt about Henry Brown, a key figure in the underground railroad movement. Year 5 discovered that the underground railroad was not a real railway. It was a secret system of hidden routes and safe houses that were used by enslaved people in the 1800’s in the US to escape to freedom.

Year 5 wrote some brilliant biographies about Henry Brown where they captured his early life, which was spent on a plantation picking cotton. The children then thought about how he started his own family and seemed happy for a while. All of this changed when his family were sold and Henry decided to mail himself in a box to the free state of Philadelphia!

Through brilliantly detailed biographies, Year 5 have captured the resilience of Henry ‘Box’ Brown in the face of adversity. Well done!
