Last week in school we celebrated money week and the theme was Money Matters.
In Early Years, Nursery and Reception had fun counting out the right amount of money for items in their shop and at the outdoor ice cream shop. Nursery were busy buying ice cream in the outdoor area, counting out 1p, 2p and 3p. Reception counted out 1p coins to buy bus and train tickets.

In Year 1 they learnt how to spend and save money. They thought about what we could buy with different types of money, using coins, notes and even bank transfers. They had so much fun role-playing shops. They thought about how much money they would need to buy different items and what the best options were for the money they had. They realised the importance of saving up to make sure they have the right amount of money to buy different things we need or want.
Year 2 enjoyed lots of practical sessions adding different amounts of money, using a variety of different coins. They also spent time discussing what they could afford with varying amounts.
Year 3 focused on the big question: Where does money come from? The children spent time thinking about why we need money before thinking about where we get money from, focusing on different jobs people can do and how different jobs can earn different amounts of money. Year 3 thought about what they might like to do for a job when they are older. They then made an advertisement for a job, and wrote simple job description.

In Year 4 the focus was reasons why people might borrow money and the consequences of this. This session focused on the links between money and feelings and emotions. The children spent time looking at various scenarios and how each money scenario might make someone feel. They then discussed as a class and collected ideas about their own thoughts about borrowing money.

In Year 5 they discussed the meanings of investment, profit and fiance, thinking carefully about how some investments are risk. They discussed the different ways of keeping money safe e.g bank, purse/wallet, money box and investment. Year 5 then teamed up to play a game where teams chose two money making activities: cake sale or slime. We used dice to decide if we made a profit or loss.
Year 6 have covered a number of different areas linked to looking after money including weighing up financial risks, creating and sticking to budgets and being able to spot ‘value’ for money products. The children were fantastic and could definitely spot some spending risks and were very good at identifying value for money products and when things seem like a bargain but are in fact not!
