This half term in writing the text Year 6 have been studying in depth is ‘The girl who stole an elephant’ by Nizrana Farook.
Chaya, a no-nonsense, outspoken hero, leads her friends and a gorgeous elephant on a noisy, fraught, joyous adventure through the jungle where revolution is stirring, and leeches lurk. Will stealing the queen’s jewels be the beginning or the end of everything for the intrepid gang?
As they have journeyed with Chaya and her friends through the dense Sri Lankan jungle, the children have been on a journey of their own – a writing journey. They started in the king’s palace describing a joyous, majestic festival before they followed Chaya into the jungle and immersed themselves in those surroundings aiming to bring the jungle to life for their readers. In both setting descriptions they have used precise vocabulary, similes and personification to paint a picture for the reader.
