Year 6-Maths

A post in our latest news section.

Year 6 have made a flying start to maths this Year.

We have recapped skills from Year 5 such as ordering, comparing, reading and writing numbers to 1,000,000 before applying those skills to numbers to 10,000,000.

We then moved on to looking the four operation more closely. We have perfected our formal written methods for addition and subtraction and moved on to some trickier written methods such as long multiplication and long division. We will continue to practice both strategies throughout Year 6.

In Year 6 we also practice many strategies for each operation to ensure that, depending on the calculation or word problem we are choosing the most efficient method to solve problems. For example for division we have learnt the formal written methods, some mental strategies such as using known facts as well as factor pairs in order to solve calculations.

Well done Year 6!
