Northern Children’s Book Festival

A post in our latest news section.

This week we were delighted to welcome author and illustrator, Adeola Sokunbi, into school to speak with children in Key Stages 1&2. It was inspiring for the children to see themselves represented and they thoroughly enjoyed taking part in her workshop.

Adeola spoke about her training at university in computer animation and how she used to doodle all the time. She even convinced her mum to let her doodle on the walls at home! It was this that brought her to the attention of an agent, who contacted her to ask if she’d be interested in writing and illustrating her own novels for children. Adeola jumped at the chance and created the character, Destiny Ink. Destiny Ink loves to doodle, and whilst she wasn’t created as a carbon copy of Adeola, she was very much inspired by her younger self when creating her.

The children were treated to a reading of her story, which was really interactive. Adeola included lots of children with her questioning and children were excited to share their own likes and interests with her. Following this, she demonstrated how to illustrate a monster. This involved lots of audience participation which the children loved! And so, Maylee the monster was born.

Many children had pre-paid for a copy of Adeola’s book and she very kindly signed each copy personally. It was a great visit and children can’t wait to create their own monsters in school during the week.
