Maths in Reception – Spring 1

A post in our latest news section.

Our learning in maths is not just about being able to rote count. It is about having a deep understanding of numbers and giving the children a secure foundation in maths so they are able to build on this as they move through the school.

This half term the children have been using lots of manipulatives to help them understand numbers up to 8. We have been looking at the composition of numbers up to 8 and how we can make numbers in different ways. The composition of a number takes a lot of practice and we do lots of oral rehearsal. We often say, 2 is a part, 3 is a part and the whole is 5. We have explored this with all numbers up to 8 in lots of different ways.

Developing the children’s mathematical language and understanding is also vital in Reception. The children have explored the concept one more and one less with numbers up to 8, as well as developing their language of capacity – identifying full, empty, nearly full and nearly empty and mass – heavier, lighter.
