This term the children in Reception have been working hard to understand the concepts of the numbers 1-5. They begin finding 1, and they then learn that 2 is 1 and another 1. Number blocks visuals and videos help the children visualise the amounts. It is important that the children have a secure understanding of the numbers 1-5 and their corresponding compositions. They use lots of different maths equipment.
The children work hard on counting confidently and accurately up to 5 objects. They work on finding collections to represent numbers up to 5. They begin to use ‘not’ as a sorting criterion.
It is vital that they have a secure understanding of the numbers 1-5 and their compositions. They need to know all of the ways to make each number, e.g. 4 + 1 = 5 and 2 + 3 = 5. They should be able to confidently recall these number facts for the numbers 1-5.
