This term, understanding the world, saw us exploring growing. We began by reading the story Jack and the Beanstalk, the children were intrigued by the huge beanstalk with the giant living in the castle at the top. They wanted to grow their own. The very next day we had some beans left for us in Nursery and knew straight away that we needed to plant them in hope we could grow our very own beanstalk.
Before we planted the seeds we needed to learn how to take care of a plant to help them grow. We soon discovered that plants needed sunlight and water to help them grow.

The children planted their own seeds and got creative making castles for the top of the beanstalks. They were excited to hide the seed in the compost before watering it and placing it on the windowsill in the sunlight. We also planted some seeds in our planter to observe the parts of the plants as they grow.

The soon began to grow, the children check on the plants daily and remind Mrs Simpson when they need watered. Some children have even took it upon themselves to sing to the plants to try and help them grow.

From this we began to discuss animals growing, the children soon learned that animals weren’t like plants and needed different things to help them grow.
We watched a time lapse video of an egg hatching and then the chick growing. The children really enjoyed observing and learning about the different stages in the lifecycle of a hen.

In provision the children used their fine motor skills to cut and stick as they independently discussed and sequenced the life cycle of a hen.
