Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements we make with our hands and fingers. Children need to develop finger strength, hand strength, wrist strength and hand-eye coordination before they are ready to be competent writers, that are able to control a pencil with precision.
In Reception, the children complete a range of tasks designed to improve their fine motor skills each day. Our carefully designed curriculum consistently provides children with plentiful opportunities to develop their fine motor skills; both in specific lessons and whilst they are freely exploring the provision.
The children have enjoyed controlling small objects this half term, including: matchsticks, paper clips, hole punchers and straws. Other opportunities that the children have enjoyed this half term include: cutting, our woodwork area, making dough, painting with different mediums, using bingo dabbers and squeezing the water out of pom poms and sponges.
