Author Visit

A post in our latest news section.

On Monday afternoon Year 6 were visited by author Sarah Millington. She came in to talk to Year 6 about her first novel Demelda Rice is not very nice. The themes in Sarah’s book were perfect for Year 6 as the main character in the novel, Sophie, is just about to start secondary school. We talked together first about what some of our fears were about starting secondary school and what we were looking forward to. Some of the fears we had were bullying, getting lost, losing friends, making new friends and managing homework. Some of the things we are looking forward to are making new friends from different places, different lessons we haven’t tried before, different clubs and the freedom that secondary school brings.

Sarah then told us more about her debut novel, where one of the themes we investigated was social media- as Sophie encounters lots of problems centred around social media, when Demelda Rice shares an embarrassing news paper article about Sophie’s dad through social media. We talked about how the protagonist Sophie acts out of character and ends up in trouble and Sophie needs to be brave when it really matters and stand up for herself and what she believes in.
